02 / Verify the Scope
Certification for the Finished Coffee Cup
Ask for the certificate, current directory entry and exact product identification. Match the proposed cup to the listed description and relevant dimensions or material limits. A certificate for a lining resin is not the same as certification of the finished printed cup; BPI’s certification FAQ explains that finished products made with certified components still require certification.
Separate commercial and home compostability in your brief. BPI’s certification program covers commercial assessment and, since 2025, a separate home program. Its product directory guidance says all listed items are commercially certified, while home-certified entries carry a specific “Yes” indicator.
Your approval file should identify the finished item, certification scope, seller and permitted artwork. Keep food-contact documentation alongside compostability evidence: they answer different purchasing questions. Ask the supplier to explain any mismatch before approving the order.
03 / Match Cups and Lids
Compostable Coffee Cups with Lids
Qualify the lid as its own purchasing item. Record its material, product reference and intended use, then request documentation for the lid itself. A cup certificate should not be treated as evidence for a different component.

Test the actual cup and lid together. Similar rim measurements are a starting point, while samples establish fit during filling, carrying and drinking. Include sleeves, stirrers and other accessories in your disposal review so staff can explain each item consistently.

Build the artwork around your cafe identity and an instruction customers can follow. Keep disposal wording readable alongside the logo, drink markings and other operational information. A small proof viewed flat can hide legibility problems on a curved cup, so check a wrapped sample.
The FTC’s Green Guides summary advises substantiation and appropriate qualifications for compostable claims, including when home composting is unsuitable or facilities are not widely available. Match the statement to the documented product and intended market.

Ask your waste collector where the cups will go and whether that receiving facility accepts the proposed cup and lid. EPA’s food service ware guidance recommends commercially compostable purchases where a local program accepts the product types and collection is arranged. Certification and local acceptance are separate checks.
For a cafe collection program, place clearly labeled bins where drinks are finished. Show the actual accepted items, train staff and review contamination after launch. Consider how takeaway customers will find the right disposal route away from your premises.
EPA describes composting as a managed process requiring suitable conditions and notes that accepted materials vary by facility. Agree on the collection plan before buying in volume, and revisit it if your collector or packaging changes.

Can compostable coffee cups go in home compost?
Only choose that route when the finished product is specifically suitable for home composting. Commercial certification alone does not establish home suitability. Verify the label and certification scope for the exact cup.
Are compostable coffee cup lids included in the cup certification?
Do not assume they are. Request the lid’s own product identification and supporting evidence, and confirm that your collection service accepts it. Also check compatibility with the actual cup sample.
Does a plant-based lining make a cup compostable?
A material description is insufficient evidence for the assembled cup. EPA’s plastics FAQ distinguishes biobased materials from compostability. Request documentation for the finished construction.
Can compostable cups go in the recycling bin?
Follow local instructions for the specific item. EPA advises keeping compostable plastics out of conventional plastic recycling. Ask your collector which route accepts your cup and lid rather than choosing a bin by appearance.
How do I compare wholesale quotations?
Give each supplier the same construction, sizes, lid requirement, artwork, documentation needs and delivery brief. Compare the complete proposal after sample review; confirm price, order quantity and schedule for that specification.
